FAQ

What are Shiny Pokémon?
A Shiny Pokémon is a Pokémon with a rare, alternative coloration. They are purely cosmetic and offer no advantage in battle. (Although they might fill your opponent with envy.)
In Pokémon GO, only select species of Pokémon have shiny variants at the moment. As time goes on, Niantic will release more of them through events. It should be noted that Niantic doesn’t determine the coloration of these Pokémon. They were algorithmically produced by The Pokémon Company for the handheld games. Shinies were first found in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
Are Shiny Pokémon limited time/only during events?
Nope! Once a Pokémon’s Shiny variant is released in Pokémon GO, there is always a chance that species can be shiny.
eg. Shiny Charmander was released during May’s Community Day but you can still catch or hatch a Shiny.
Will the same Pokémon be Shiny for everyone who encounters it?
No. Everyone’s shiny encounters are unique. Whether or not a Pokémon is shiny is determined independently per player.
What are the chances of catching or encountering a Shiny Pokémon?
It is unknown exactly what is the probability of encountering a Shiny Pokémon. However it has been put in the ballpark of 1 in 450 encounters.
Hatching and Raid encounters rates are also unknown but could possibly be similar. The exception for these rates are during Community Day where the featured Pokémon has increased Shiny encounter rates and in Raid encounters featuring Raid exclusive Pokémon like Lugia, Ho-Oh, or Mawile.
I’m having trouble finding Shiny Pokémon. Is there anything I can do to increase my chances?
The best way to increase your chances is simply encountering or ‘shiny checking’ lots of possible Shiny Pokémon. You don’t even have to catch them if you’re low on Poké Balls or Berries.
People can sometimes have seen 1000 Pokémon for one particular Shiny species with no Shiny to show for it. However to be 95% sure you encounter at least one shiny, you would need to check at least 1350 of them. (Refer to this TheSilphRoad thread for the explanation of this statement.) This doesn’t mean you can’t find one unless you encounter that many but it shows that even 1000 encounters doesn’t guarantee one. You could catch 4 shinies in 500 encounters or none in a 1000. That’s just how probability works.
Remember: Shiny Pokémon are really rare and not everyone will be able to collect every single one. It’s better to think of them as a nice thing to have. Good luck and cheer on your fellow trainers when they find one.
